The Villasana surname originates from the village of Villasana de Mena in Northern Spain in the province of Burgos at the end of Castilla y León.

It is believed Gabriel Villasana was one of the earliest from this line to come to what is today Mexico. He came in 1537 with his wife Francisca Lopez from Burgos, Spain. Francisca's parents Alonso Lopez and Isabel Fernandez were already residents of Mexico City. Gabriel's parents were Diego de Villasana and Isabel de Salazar (or Zamudio).

In the years just after the Conquest of Mexico, the Native-American population was decimated by disease and war leaving a relatively small gene pool of Native-American and Iberian ancestors.

It is estimated that half the adult male population of Iberia set out to colonize two continents. Many of these early conquistadors set out to the Americas with relatives or sent for relatives upon settling.

The ancestors of most of the current male genetic lines of Mexico would have settled in Mexico within a hundred or so years of the Conquest. This project will attempt to link us to these early conquistadors.
