Historical Notes

John made his home in that part of Henrico County that eventually became a part of Chesterfield County. He was an active and responsible citizen of the community. In 1743, he was awarded 1,040 pounds of tobacco for having kept the Swift's Creek bridge in repair for some nine years, which also indicates he was living in the county as early as 1734. In his father's will, he was bequeathed a slave that had belonged to the estate of Thomas Pinkethman, a relative through Robert Cobbs' marriage to Rebecca Pinkethman.
