ABT 1804 - ABT 1886
BIRTH ABT 1804, Carter, Tennessee, USA
DEATH ABT 1886, Dent, Missouri, USA
Historical Notes
James Newton Lay was a colorful figure. He was a Cooper, the making of Cedar pails and oak kegs was the trade he followed. Twice married, he was the father of some 17 or 18 children by the two marriages. He was of a high strung, high tempered disposition and loved to engage in fist fights. If he ever came out second best, it was after he had grown too old to defend himself.
James was the third known son of Catherine Bradley Lay and was probably born in 1804 in Carter Co., Tennessee. Pinning down his place of birth is difficult as we have no records of Catherine’s whereabouts during the years 1801 through 1811. In census records he goes by two different last names and lists three different states as the place of his birth.
Y-DNA testing suggested and autosomal DNA testing showed that he was the son of David James Carty Sr. This is described in the Research Report Identifying the Father of James Newton Lay by Ron Brenner (14 Sep 2017).
