Historical Notes
John W. "Jackie" Sellards, son of John and Annie (Alford) Sellards and grandson of Hezekiah Sellards was born ca 1798 probably on Buffalo Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky. He married May 27, 1827 Elizabeth "Betty" Burchett, born about 1810 in Virginia, daughter of Benjamin Burchett. When Jackie's father moved from Buffalo Creek to Ivel, Kentucky, he left Jackie and his brother-in-law Thomas Davis as co-managers of his Buffalo land holdings.
Jackie lived in Floyd County near the Pike County line in the neighborhood where he was born. It is said he taught school at one time. Land records indicate he acquired considerable land. His will in 1888 indicated his wife was living at the time. Henry P. Scalf's mother related to him that "Uncle Jackie" as he was called, was a very small man, crippled to some extent, which in his old age hampered his activity. The cause of his infirmity is not known.
