Rush Berry organized the first church orchestra ever formed at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in 1921. His further music interests kept him active at one time as a member of the board of directors of the Waco Symphony Society and as a member of the Waco Civic Music Association.
During World War I he was director of the Liberty Bond sales for McLennan County and toured practically every community in the county with the band from Camp McArthur boosting the bonds.
