He was a veteran of the American Revolution. This instrument was proved on 20 May 1797, indicating he had died in the interim. In it he named his wife Elizabeth; sons William, Thomas, and Lewis; and daughters Polly Dixon, Catherine, and Elizabeth. The Executors were his father Thomas Cobbs "the Elder", William Beckham, and Howell Cobbs. Witnesses to his signature were Thomas Napier, Basil Jones, John Benning, John Cobbs, and John de Yampert (sic).
